Kano State Governor Approves Promotions for Nearly 19,000 Education Workers

Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, has approved promotions for 18,984 teaching and non-teaching staff at the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). This decision affects workers across the state’s 44 Local Government Education Authorities and is set to take effect in January and July 2026.

The governor’s approval came after a request from the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Yusuf Kabir, who asked for over N235 million to fund these promotions. A statement from the Government House Director General of Media and Publicity, Sunusi Tofa, confirmed that the promotions had been processed for eligible staff.

The implementation of these promotions will also include adjustments to the salaries of the affected workers. According to SUBEB, timely promotions are crucial for motivating staff, supporting their career growth, and enhancing service delivery in basic education.

Currently, there are about 60,000 teaching and non-teaching personnel serving in the state, making it one of the largest public institutions in Kano. The statement noted that the Yusuf administration inherited a backlog of promotions that had not been addressed for up to seven years, along with another backlog of one and a half years.

The governor had previously approved outstanding promotions, which helped boost staff morale and rebuild trust among workers. The necessary processes for the 2026 promotion cycles, including verifying staff eligibility and calculating salary adjustments, have been completed.

The Kano State Executive Council has ratified the governor’s approval, allowing the funds for the promotions to be released. This move reflects the administration’s commitment to the welfare and career development of public servants in the education sector.
