Kogi Assembly Passes State Police Bill, Group Calls for Quick National Action
The Conscience for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution (CHRCR) has praised the Kogi State House of Assembly for passing a bill to create state police. This decision is seen as a major step towards improving security in Nigeria.
In a statement released on October 28, 2026, in Lokoja, CHRCR’s Executive Director, Idris Miliki Abdul, said the new state police would help prevent and fight violent extremism in local communities. He emphasized that security is a shared responsibility involving the government, security forces, and local residents.
Abdul pointed out that having state police would allow communities to engage more effectively in tackling their specific security issues. He noted that 24 state assemblies have already supported the necessary changes to the constitution, which is a positive sign in the ongoing discussions about state police.
He urged the National Assembly to finalize the legislative steps needed to establish state police quickly. Additionally, he recommended that the Kogi State Government form a committee to plan and implement the new police system once the law is passed.
Abdul stressed that careful planning and a clear strategy are crucial for the success of this initiative, which aims to enhance public safety and address security challenges at the local level. He reiterated the need for collective efforts and readiness among institutions to build a more responsive security system for communities in Kogi State and across Nigeria.
