Lagos Consumer Agency Recovers Over N759 Million for Residents in Six Years

The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has successfully recovered over N759 million and nearly $15,000 for consumers in the past six years. This recovery includes billing adjustments and direct refunds for residents who faced unfair business practices.

According to LASCOPA’s General Manager, Afolabi Solebo, the agency has addressed more than 10,700 complaints out of about 11,100 received. These complaints span various sectors such as banking, aviation, real estate, e-commerce, logistics, telecommunications, and utilities.

Solebo shared this information while discussing the agency’s work since he was appointed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in November 2020. He noted that 250 complaints are still being mediated, and 150 have been sent to relevant regulatory bodies for further action.

To enhance its reach, LASCOPA has opened eight additional offices in different areas of Lagos, including Badagry and Ikorodu. Solebo emphasized the agency’s goal to ensure that no resident is cheated in the marketplace. He mentioned plans to engage local authorities to open more offices ahead of 2027.

The agency has also increased market surveillance across Lagos, issuing 437 notices to retail outlets and supermarkets for various violations, such as misleading product labels and lack of price tags. Solebo stated that these efforts aim to promote transparency and compliance with consumer protection laws.

In terms of revenue, LASCOPA generated over N20 million for the Lagos State Government from January to September 2026, surpassing its annual target of N10 million. The agency plans to continue its inspections and public awareness campaigns to educate residents about their consumer rights.

Solebo encouraged residents to report any violations through the agency’s toll-free line, ensuring that manufacturers and retailers are held accountable across Lagos.
