NANS Encourages Student Participation Ahead of 2027 Elections

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, is urging its members to actively participate in the upcoming 2027 general elections. The call comes after NANS President Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez formed a committee for election mobilization and monitoring.

In a statement from Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, the Coordinator of NANS Southwest Zone D, the organization praised the 18 student leaders chosen to represent various states including Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo, and Ekiti. With just 98 days until the elections, they believe this initiative is both timely and important.

NANS highlighted the significant number of young voters in the region, citing data from recent elections. For example, in the August 2026 Osun governorship election, there were over 857,000 youths and around 752,000 students among the voters. This shows the potential impact students can have on the electoral process.

The organization is encouraging the newly appointed committee members to start engaging with students at the grassroots level. NANS warned that their roles should not be seen as just ceremonial, but as a call to action for voter education and participation.

Furthermore, NANS supports the goal of getting at least 10 million Nigerian students to vote in the upcoming elections. However, they clarified that this mobilization does not mean they endorse any specific political candidate or party. The association plans to assess candidates based on their policies regarding education, student welfare, and youth development before making any collective decisions.
