A new documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of the failed health technology company Theranos, will be released in theaters on October 16. The film was made by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim during the 34 days leading up to her prison sentence for fraud.
Holmes gained attention for claiming her company could perform medical tests with just a few drops of blood. Despite attracting high-profile investors, her company ultimately collapsed. In 2022, she was sentenced to over 11 years in prison for fraud and conspiracy.
The documentary, titled “You Can See Everything,” captures Holmes’ life at home with her partner Billy Evans and their two children. The film blends documentary and reality TV styles, and has already received praise after its premiere at the Telluride Film Festival.
Fielder, known for his unique comedic style, said that Holmes initiated the project by reaching out to the entertainment company A24. After several meetings, she invited the filmmakers into her home, leading to unexpected and sometimes uncomfortable moments.
During a recent screening in Los Angeles, Fielder and Oppenheim described their experience making the film as “really sad and hard at times.” They noted that both Holmes and Evans were not familiar with Fielder’s work when they began filming.
As the documentary unfolds, it explores the complexities of Holmes’ life and the tension that arose during filming. While Holmes remains in prison and has not seen the final cut, the filmmakers hope the documentary will help others understand her story.
