Nigeria Police Promise Safety for Corps Members During 2027 Elections

The Nigeria Police Force has promised to protect members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and other temporary staff during the 2027 general elections. This assurance came from the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Aniete Iniedu, during a media briefing organized by the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Concerns had been raised about the safety of corps members, especially after reports of abductions in various regions. These corps members are expected to play a key role as temporary workers for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the elections.

Iniedu stated that the police have assessed potential threats and are enhancing security measures to ensure the safety of electoral staff and materials. He emphasized that these security arrangements will involve collaboration with other security agencies before, during, and after the elections.

He noted that while elections can attract threats, the police are prepared to address these challenges. In past elections, such as the Osun State election, the police successfully ensured the safety of corps members and their families.

The police are also increasing their presence and have been directed to distribute necessary equipment and logistics to enhance security. Iniedu highlighted the importance of protecting young Nigerians involved in the electoral process and warned against hate speech and political violence that could disrupt the elections.

The police have recorded several incidents of hate speech and are taking steps to address them. Iniedu mentioned that all police commissioners have been instructed to arrest and prosecute those involved in such criminal activities. Additionally, the police have set up channels for the public to report any failures by police commissioners to act on these issues.
