Nigeria Supports UN Candidate Committed to Africa’s Goals, Says Vice President

Nigeria’s Vice President Kashim Shettima has stated that the country will support a candidate for the United Nations Secretary-General position who aligns with Africa’s goals in global matters. Shettima made this announcement during a meeting with Rebeca Grynspan, the Costa Rican candidate for the role, in New York.

According to a statement from his spokesman, Shettima emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to fairness and justice in its support for any candidate. He highlighted the importance of selecting someone who values Africa’s role in global decision-making and promotes cooperation among nations.

Shettima noted that he would recommend Grynspan based on Nigeria’s historical ties with Latin America and the importance of gender representation. He expressed gratitude for Grynspan’s interest in Nigeria’s perspective on her candidacy.

Grynspan, in her appeal for support, mentioned her dedication to leading the UN in implementing necessary reforms that many countries, especially in the Global South, are advocating for. She expressed her understanding of Africa’s needs and aspirations, promising to prioritize peace and support Africa’s ambition for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.

In a related discussion, Nigeria and the Netherlands have agreed to work together to enhance financial inclusion in Nigeria. This collaboration was established during a meeting between Shettima and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands in New York.

Shettima welcomed the Netherlands’ support in improving financial inclusion, particularly for women and vulnerable groups. He noted that this initiative is linked to education, security, and poverty reduction, and mentioned ongoing programs like cash transfers and agricultural schemes.

Queen Maxima praised Nigeria’s economic growth and pledged her country’s assistance in areas such as insurance and credit guarantees to strengthen financial health for Nigerians.
