PalmPay Focuses on Security in Nigeria’s Growing Digital Payment Landscape

Fintech company PalmPay is increasing its efforts to enhance digital payment security in Nigeria. Femi Hanson, the Head of Marketing at PalmPay Nigeria, expressed enthusiasm about the growing trend of Nigerians using their phones for money transfers, bill payments, salary receipts, and business operations. He noted that digital payments have become a regular part of financial life.

However, Hanson also raised concerns about the rise of fraud linked to these digital transactions. He pointed out that fraudsters are using tactics like impersonation, phishing, and fake customer service interactions to target users.

The Central Bank of Nigeria’s Payments System Vision 2028 highlights security and trust as key principles for the country’s payment system, along with inclusion and innovation. Consumer protection is also a vital aspect of this framework.

According to Hanson, fintech companies and payment providers must prioritize consumer awareness and fraud prevention. PalmPay’s campaign, “PalmPay Dey For You,” aims to address these issues by promoting consumer protection and digital safety.

He cautioned that technology alone cannot prevent fraud. Users can still be tricked into revealing sensitive information through convincing phone calls or unexpected messages that appear to be from financial institutions.

As more Nigerians depend on digital payments, maintaining trust will require ongoing efforts from service providers, regulators, and consumers. The future growth of digital payments in Nigeria will hinge not just on speed and convenience but also on how effectively the industry can adapt to evolving fraud tactics and protect users’ confidence.
