Police Inspector Killed by Hit-and-Run Driver in Lagos During Presidential Visit

A female police inspector named Mercy Bassey has died after being hit by a driver who fled the scene. The incident occurred on Tuesday while she was performing route-lining duty ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s arrival in Lagos.

According to a security source, Bassey was crossing the Third Mainland Bridge at the Adekunle Intersection when she was struck by a black Highlander Sport Utility Vehicle. The driver did not stop after the accident.

Police officers on patrol attempted to chase the vehicle, but it escaped to an unknown location. Bassey was taken to the General Hospital in Ebute Metta for treatment but sadly died while waiting for care.

The police are currently working to obtain CCTV footage from the area to identify the vehicle and apprehend the driver. The spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed the incident but did not provide further comments.

This tragic event occurred as security measures were heightened in Lagos due to the President’s visit. Tinubu returned to Nigeria on Tuesday after a vacation in France and the United Kingdom.
