Police Ensure Safety for Corps Members and Election Workers Ahead of 2027 Elections
The Nigeria Police Force has promised to protect members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) and other temporary workers involved in the upcoming 2027 general elections. This commitment comes after two worrying incidents where corps members were kidnapped in late 2026.
In November 2026, nine corps members and a driver were abducted on a road in Ogun State. Earlier, in October, 20 prospective corps members were kidnapped in Imo State. These events have raised concerns about the safety of young Nigerians who take part in national duties, especially during elections.
At a recent security briefing in Abuja, police spokesman Ani Iniedu stated that the police are taking these threats seriously. They have assessed potential risks and are enhancing security measures to ensure the safety of electoral personnel before, during, and after the elections.
Iniedu noted that the police are collaborating with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other security agencies to provide adequate protection for all involved. He emphasized that the police are committed to safeguarding corps members and other workers, citing their previous efforts during the Osun State elections as an example.
In preparation for the elections, the police are increasing their presence and distributing necessary equipment to support their operations. The Inspector-General of Police has ordered immediate action to ensure that security measures are in place.
In addition to ensuring safety, the police are also addressing the issue of hate speech and political violence. Iniedu reported that 11 cases of hate speech have been documented, and the police are ready to arrest and prosecute those responsible. He urged the public to report any police officers who fail to act against such offenses.
