Protesters in Ogun State Urge Governor to Reject Abortion Bill

A non-profit group, AYUBSON Life Foundation, organized a peaceful protest in Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Thursday. They are urging Governor Dapo Abiodun to reject a recently passed bill concerning safe termination of pregnancy.

The Ogun State House of Assembly approved the bill in September, titled the Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026. The bill aims to improve maternal health and establish guidelines for safe abortions under certain conditions.

However, the protesters oppose the bill, stating it could harm the rights of unborn children. They are calling for the government to focus on supporting pregnant women and families in tough situations instead.

During the protest, participants held signs with messages like “Say No to Abortion, Say Yes to Life” and “Protect Unborn Babies, Support Families.” They expressed their belief that abortion is not the solution, especially in crisis pregnancies, and emphasized the need for better support systems for women.

Yusuf Ayuba, the founder of AYUBSON Life Foundation, voiced concerns about the bill’s implications. He argued that abortion is illegal under current Nigerian law and questioned the state’s authority to change that. He urged the governor to prioritize addressing issues like poverty and unemployment instead.

Ayuba noted that the foundation became aware of the bill late in the legislative process, which led to their urgent campaign for awareness. He highlighted that many affected individuals are unaware of the bill and lack a voice in the matter.

Support for the protest also came from Badekale Abdullai, President of the National Association of Ogun State Students at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. He echoed the call for the governor to consider the concerns raised and protect unborn children.

The protesters hope their appeal will influence the governor’s decision regarding the bill.
