PTDF Promises to Boost Research and Development in Nigerian Universities

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) is committed to improving research and development in Nigerian universities. This was stated by Prof. Shua’ibu Aliyu, the Executive Secretary of PTDF, during a recent event at the University of Benin in Benin City.

Aliyu emphasized that PTDF’s goal is to support academic excellence and promote research that tackles real challenges faced by the nation and industry. He highlighted the importance of developing practical solutions in renewable energy as Nigeria’s energy needs change.

At the event, which marked the close of the PTDF Professional Chair in Renewable Energy, Aliyu spoke about a seminar focused on converting agricultural waste into biodiesel. He noted that this approach not only offers an alternative energy source but also helps with waste management and creates job opportunities for young Nigerians.

Prof. Kensington Obahiagbaon, the chairholder of the PTDF chair in Renewable Energy, discussed the global issues related to fossil fuels, including environmental concerns and energy security. He pointed out that using agricultural waste for biodiesel is essential for addressing these challenges and is a key part of a sustainable economy.

Obahiagbaon outlined the necessary support from the government, such as tax incentives and infrastructure investment, to advance the biodiesel sector. He also mentioned the need for private investment to fill funding gaps and provide the technology needed for large-scale production.

He identified several challenges, including inadequate infrastructure and the need for a consistent supply of materials like vegetable oils. He stressed that Nigeria’s success in biodiesel production relies on effective organization and coordinated efforts.
