Senator Kawu Calls for Ethical Standards in Kano Radio Stations
Senator Sulaiman Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, who represents Kano South, has asked local radio stations in Kano State to maintain professional standards and stop using their platforms for character attacks and political slander. He made this statement during a meeting with members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists in Kano.
Kawu pointed out that some politicians treat elections as a “do-or-die” situation, resorting to false claims and damaging the reputations of their opponents to gain votes. He emphasized that the media, especially local radio, should promote constructive political discussions and hold public officials accountable without allowing personal attacks.
Additionally, Kawu urged Nigerians to recognize the achievements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, while also highlighting his own contributions since taking office in 2023. He mentioned that he has helped facilitate over 100 projects in various areas, including education, healthcare, agriculture, and security.
However, he noted that weak oversight is a significant issue for the National Assembly, stating that effective oversight is crucial for accountability and better governance. Kawu criticized the media for not conducting thorough investigative reporting and for failing to hold politicians accountable for their campaign promises.
The Senator, who represents 16 local government areas in Kano State, encouraged his constituents and the media to verify his claims and assess his performance. He recalled presenting his legislative agenda focused on social justice and key areas like education and agriculture during a meeting in October 2022.
Kawu urged both journalists and the public to evaluate his record, particularly in security, human development, and legislation, and to judge public officials based on their actual achievements and commitments to the electorate.
