SON Highlights Importance of Clean Energy for Industrial Growth in Nigeria
The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has stressed that clean energy is crucial for industrial growth, innovation, job creation, and enhancing quality of life. This statement was made in Abuja during a market sensitization program for World Standards Day.
Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, the Director General of SON, explained that standards are vital for ensuring that technologies and products related to clean energy are safe and efficient. He noted that without these standards, it would be difficult to achieve affordable and reliable energy.
This year’s World Standards Day theme, ‘Shared Vision for a Better World,’ highlights the importance of affordable and clean energy, which is a key part of the Sustainable Development Goals. Okeke mentioned that SON is committed to helping Nigeria transition to cleaner energy sources.
SON has worked on developing standards for various sectors, including energy management and healthcare. Recently, they have focused on standards for compressed natural gas (CNG), which the federal government supports as an alternative fuel. Okeke stated that SON approved 80 standards in 2024 related to CNG, covering areas such as vehicle safety and diagnostics.
Dr. John Aseni, the Director General of the Nigerian Copyright Commission, also spoke at the event. He emphasized that standards are not just technical rules but are essential for quality, public trust, and economic growth. He encouraged manufacturers and service providers to adhere to established standards and maintain ethical practices.
Innocent Ameachi from Abuja Market Management Limited praised SON for its efforts towards cleaner energy, noting that businesses are increasingly adopting clean energy solutions in their operations.
