Trump Calls Nobel Peace Prize Decision a Disgrace After Pillay’s Win
President Donald Trump has expressed his disappointment with Norway for awarding this year’s Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay, a former judge at the International Criminal Court. He called the decision “disgraceful and embarrassing” during a rally in Syracuse, New York, shortly after the announcement was made.
Trump questioned Pillay’s identity and accused the Nobel committee of damaging the prize’s reputation. He stated he had never heard of Pillay, referring to her as a “mystery person”. He declared, “This is an indelible stain on the country of Norway,” and added, “we will not forget.” Trump also claimed that the Nobel Peace Prize has lost its credibility due to the committee’s choices, labeling its members as “radical ideologues” who are against democracy.
Pillay was recognized for her efforts in promoting peace and international law, which the Nobel committee said contributed to a more just global legal system. Her work has been crucial in ensuring that those responsible for serious crimes like war crimes and genocide are prosecuted.
Jørgen Watne Frydnes, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, praised Pillay’s contributions to international justice. Upon receiving the award, Pillay humorously remarked that if the audience clapped more, she might share the prize with Trump.
This is not the first time Trump has reacted negatively to the Nobel committee’s decisions. Last year, he was also disappointed when Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado received the prize instead of him. The White House had then accused the committee of prioritizing politics over peace.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre explained to Trump that the decision was made by an independent committee and not the Norwegian government. The Nobel committee later clarified that once a prize is awarded, it cannot be transferred or shared with anyone else.
