Two Men Deny Kidnapping NYSC Members in Court
Two men are on trial for allegedly kidnapping 20 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). They both denied any involvement in the crime during a court hearing.
Usman Aliyu and Babangida Aliyu began presenting their defense in court. Usman, the first defendant, claimed he was arrested while heading to his shop in Abia State. He stated that he was not told why he was arrested until the next day, when he was accused of kidnapping. He also mentioned that he provided a statement to the Department of State Services (DSS) which was translated into Hausa.
Usman asked the court for forgiveness and requested to be released. He acknowledged that he was recorded discussing his alleged involvement in the crime but denied being identified during a police lineup.
Babangida, the second defendant, testified that he lives in Port Harcourt and runs a business selling noodles, bread, and tea. He claimed he was arrested at his shop and denied knowing Usman or being part of the kidnapping. Like Usman, he also pleaded for the court’s mercy, citing his responsibilities as a husband and father.
During questioning, Babangida struggled to remember the name of the street where his shop is located and admitted he had no documents proving ownership of the shop. He confirmed that his statement was recorded in front of his lawyer.
The case has been adjourned until November 6, 2026, for further hearings.
