VP Shettima Touches Down in Abuja After High-Stakes African Union Peace Summit

Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja following his participation in the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU) held in Luanda, Angola.

Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the continental gathering, led Nigeria’s delegation in high-level discussions centered on conflict prevention, regional security architecture, and lasting peace across Africa.

During the plenary sessions, Nigeria advocated for stronger African-led conflict resolution frameworks, urging member nations to take greater ownership of peacebuilding initiatives rather than relying primarily on external interventions. The delegation also gave its full backing to the Luanda Action Plan, emphasizing the need for predictable and sustainable continental financing to support rapid-response peacekeeping and dispute resolution.

In addition to broad security deliberations, Nigeria utilized the summit platform to raise urgent concerns regarding the persistent xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks faced by African migrants, particularly in South Africa. Reaffirming Nigeria’s firm stance shortly before his departure from Luanda, the Vice President declared that the country will no longer accept the harassment, public humiliation, or dehumanisation of its citizens living abroad.

The Vice President’s return marks the conclusion of Nigeria’s diplomatic push at the extraordinary summit, with the administration reaffirming its commitment to working alongside regional partners to build a secure, united, and economically stable continent.
