Woji Community Leaders Clash Over Land Dispute in Rivers State
In the Woji Community of Rivers State, a land dispute has sparked tensions between local leaders. Residents are determined to protect their ancestral land, known as Gbalajam, from being sold. The traditional ruler of Evo Kingdom, His Majesty Leslie Eke, spoke to reporters about the issue on Tuesday.
Eke accused Chief Emeka Ihunwo of illegally selling parts of the land for 13 years without permission from the local palace. He warned the public not to engage with Ihunwo regarding land transactions, claiming he is not from the royal family and has no right to sell community land.
According to Eke, Ihunwo was merely a palace secretary to Eke’s late father, the former king. Eke stated, “After 13 years, I have a reason to stop him from selling land. It is not his birthright to sell Woji land.” He has mobilized over 40 young people to watch over the land and prevent further sales.
In response, Ihunwo, who also calls himself the Paramount Ruler of Woji Community, expressed concern about armed youths in the area. He alleged that Eke brought in suspected cult members and an excavator to the disputed land, despite the matter being in court. Ihunwo claimed that the land is still under litigation and that he has already won a ruling on the issue.
Ihunwo called on the state government to intervene and prevent Eke from taking actions that could disrupt peace in the community. The police have been involved to help restore calm as the situation develops.
