World Leaders Gather in Bangkok for Key IMF and World Bank Meetings

World leaders are meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, from October 12 to 18, 2026, for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Annual Meetings. This gathering brings together over 15,000 delegates from 191 countries, including finance ministers and central bank governors.

The focus of the discussions will be on pressing issues such as rising debts, climate finance, job creation, and inequality. These topics are especially important as the global economy faces challenges from high debt levels and climate-related shocks.

Among the Nigerian representatives attending the meetings are Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele and Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso. Their participation comes shortly after Nigeria called for changes to global governance and financial systems at the recent BRICS Summit in India.

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, emphasized the need for a fairer and more responsive international financial system. He stated that institutions must reflect current economic and demographic realities.

Earlier this year, the IMF lowered its growth forecast for the world economy due to ongoing conflicts and other global pressures. The organization now estimates that global economic growth will be around 3.0 percent for 2026, down from previous predictions.

As these leaders convene, the world will be watching to see if they can find common ground on these critical issues and work towards a more equitable future.
