Court Jails Retired Civil Servant for Age Falsification, Compels Refund of ₦1.23 Million Fraud Proceeds

A major judicial victory in the fight against corruption was recorded today, Tuesday, November 4, 2025, as a retired civil servant was convicted and jailed for offences bordering on age falsification and the fraudulent diversion of public funds amounting to ₦1.23 million.

The conviction, secured by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), sends a strong signal regarding the Federal Government’s zero-tolerance policy towards administrative corruption within the public service.

The former public servant was charged with manipulating official records to alter their date of birth, an illegal practice commonly used by civil servants to fraudulently extend their period of service beyond the statutory retirement age. The investigation also uncovered a separate count of theft of public funds amounting to ₦1,230,000.

Imprisonment and Financial Penalties

The court found the defendant guilty on all counts, sentencing the individual to a term of imprisonment (length not immediately disclosed) and imposing heavy financial sanctions.

In addition to the jail term, the convict was mandated to pay a fine of ₦200,000 and, crucially, ordered to refund the entire amount stolen ₦1.23 million directly into the ICPC Recovery Account.

The Director of Public Enlightenment and Education for the ICPC confirmed today that the convict demonstrated compliance with the financial penalties, having already paid both the fine and the full refund of the stolen money.

The Commission reaffirmed its dedication to eradicating corruption in all forms, stating that the successful prosecution serves as a powerful deterrent. The ICPC remains focused on bringing to justice all public officials who abuse their positions or manipulate administrative systems like the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) for personal gain.
