US Shutters Routine Visa Operations in Abuja and 24 African Cities in Massive Consular Realignment

Nigerians and citizens across 24 other African nations face major travel adjustments following a sweeping overhaul by the US Department of State that centralizes routine visa processing across the continent into select regional hubs.

Under the new directive effective August 1, 2026, the US Embassy in Abuja will permanently discontinue routine immigrant and non-immigrant visa operations. As a result, all Nigerian applicants seeking visitor, business, student, or employment visas will now be required to schedule their interviews and submit documents through the US Consulate in Lagos.

The massive restructuring affects 25 diplomatic posts across Africa, including capitals such as Bamako, Cotonou, Freetown, Harare, Lusaka, and Niamey. Instead of localized visa processing, Washington is routing all routine consular services through 20 designated regional processing centers, which include Lagos, Accra, Abidjan, Nairobi, Johannesburg, and Dakar.

Explaining the operational shift, the US Department of State noted that consolidating consular operations is part of broader efforts by President Donald Trump’s administration to strengthen national security and streamline government spending.

“The Department of State is constantly evaluating its overseas operations in order to advance America’s priorities as efficiently and effectively as possible,” the State Department announced in an official statement. “This includes a visa process that maintains rigorous standards of security screening and vetting and aligns resources and operational capacity with America’s national interests.”

Despite the end of routine visa processing in Abuja, American officials reassured the public that the US Embassy in the nation’s capital is not closing down. The mission will continue to handle high-level diplomatic engagements and provide emergency consular assistance to US citizens living in or visiting Nigeria.

Furthermore, foreign nationals holding currently valid US visas will not be affected by the policy update. However, prospective applicants planning to apply for fresh US visas after the cutoff date must adjust their logistics, as all in-person appointments in Nigeria will henceforth be handled exclusively out of Lagos.
