Nigerian Senate Launches Investigation into Tansian University Operations

The Nigerian Senate has ordered an investigation into Tansian University in Umunya, Anambra State. This decision comes after concerns were raised about the university’s management and its compliance with regulations set by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Senator Victor Umeh brought the issue to light, questioning the university’s adherence to proper procedures, especially regarding how it hires and fires staff. In response, Senate President Godswill Akpabio instructed a committee to look into the university’s operations and report back to the Senate.

During discussions, Akpabio emphasized the importance of strengthening the NUC’s authority to ensure all universities, both public and private, follow the law. He noted that if a university is found to be in violation, the National Assembly could suggest actions to the President, which might include shutting down the institution.

This investigation coincides with the Senate’s consideration of a new bill aimed at updating the NUC Act of 2026. The bill seeks to enhance the NUC’s power to enforce regulations, improve academic standards, and ensure that Nigerian universities align with global practices.

Lawmakers believe that a stronger regulatory framework is essential for improving the quality of education, fostering research, and keeping Nigerian universities competitive on the world stage. The Senate has tasked the committee on tertiary education and TETFund with conducting the investigation and reporting back within two weeks.
