Pope Leo XIV Shares Recovery Progress After Lung Cancer Surgery
Pope Leo XIV announced on Friday that he is feeling “fairly good” after undergoing surgery for lung cancer last month. He made this statement while starting a 12-day trip to South America, beginning with a visit to Uruguay.
During a press conference on the papal plane, the Pope expressed confidence in the trip despite concerns from some. He said, “I had no doubt and was convinced that this trip had to go forward. And I am very happy to say praise the Lord and thanks to wonderful medical assistance, I’m here today, I think in fairly good shape.”
The 71-year-old Pope had surgery on October 13 to remove a cancerous tumor and part of his right lung. He was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli hospital on October 17. Doctors have confirmed that he is fit to travel and does not need any further treatment.
When asked about advice for those facing a cancer diagnosis, Pope Leo XIV emphasized the importance of not being afraid. He stated, “Early detection is obviously the best way to go and so regular check-ups are a blessing. And take care of yourselves.”
The Pope also mentioned that he has not yet returned to playing tennis, a sport he enjoys, but he plans to do so soon.
