Nigeria Leads Key Elections at UN General Assembly in New York

Nigeria has taken a leading role in important elections at the United Nations General Assembly’s Fifth Committee, held in New York. The elections, led by Nigeria’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, resulted in significant appointments for Mauritania and Israel.

C.D. Mohammed from Mauritania was recommended to serve as Chair of the International Civil Service Commission. He received 102 votes, defeating Maria from Zimbabwe, who got 82 votes. Mohammed will hold this position for four years starting January 1, 2027.

In another key appointment, Israel’s candidate, Shai Mazai, secured a spot on the Independent Audit Advisory Committee with 134 votes. He was recommended for a three-year term, also beginning January 1, 2027.

Ambassador Ibrahim ensured transparency during the voting process by allowing delegates to verify the ballot boxes before the votes were cast. This was part of the Committee’s review of Agenda Item 119, which deals with filling vacancies in various UN bodies.

The Fifth Committee also recommended candidates from other regions for the International Civil Service Commission without any contested nominations. At the end of the elections, Ambassador Ibrahim praised the delegates for their cooperation and commitment, and he congratulated those who were recommended for appointment.

He also recognized the contributions of officials who helped supervise the electoral process. The Ambassador concluded the Committee’s review of Agenda Item 119 and asked the Rapporteur to share the decisions with the General Assembly for further action.
