Afenifere Faction Calls for Tinubu’s Impeachment Over Lagos-Calabar Highway Project
A faction of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has called for the impeachment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing alleged constitutional breaches and conflicts of interest related to the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.
The group expressed concerns over the awarding of the project’s contract to Hitech Construction Company Ltd., a firm linked to businessman Gilbert Chagoury, without a competitive bidding process. They argue that this move undermines transparency and due process in public procurement.
Critics, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, have also raised alarms about the project’s execution. Atiku questioned the project’s cost, the lack of transparency in its funding, and potential conflicts of interest due to alleged business ties between President Tinubu and the contractor.
The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, spanning approximately 700 kilometers, is designed to connect Lagos to Calabar, traversing several coastal states. While the government touts it as a transformative infrastructure initiative, opponents argue that its current implementation favors specific interests and lacks adequate oversight.
In response to the mounting criticisms, the Federal Government has defended the project’s integrity. The Minister of Works, Engr. David Umahi, stated that the project is neither wasteful nor corrupt, urging Nigerians to disregard contrary opinions.
The Afenifere faction’s call for impeachment adds to the growing discourse on governance, accountability, and transparency in Nigeria’s public sector projects.
