Amaechi Criticizes Tinubu’s Fuel Subsidy Removal, Highlights Economic Hardship
Rotimi Amaechi, the vice presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s approach to removing fuel subsidies. He spoke out during a town hall meeting in Calabar on Saturday, highlighting the negative effects this decision has had on Nigerians.
Amaechi, who previously served as Minister of Transportation and governor of Rivers State, argued that the government should have consulted experts, such as economists and political scientists, before making this policy change. He emphasized that any bold move in policymaking needs to be carefully planned to avoid harming citizens.
Using an analogy of a moving train, Amaechi warned that taking risks without proper preparation can lead to serious problems. He raised concerns about whether the government’s actions have adequately considered the well-being of the people.
The former minister suggested that political motives may have influenced the subsidy removal, connecting it to the results of the 2023 presidential election. He pointed out that this change has led to increased transportation costs and higher prices for essential goods across the country.
Amaechi questioned how the government plans to address the rising cost of living and stressed the importance of introducing measures to relieve economic pressure on households. He also expressed his willingness to engage in discussions with the government’s economic team about the policy and its effects.
Looking ahead, Amaechi stated that the opposition plans to challenge the ruling party through democratic means as the next election approaches. He affirmed their commitment to pursuing electoral processes without resorting to legal battles after elections.
