Amaechi Goes Wild Over Rumors of Stepping Down for Atiku; Insists He’s Eyeing the ADC Presidential Ticket and Blasts ‘Old Age’ Politics

The political alliance brewing inside the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has hit its first major public speed bump. Just days after walking into the party’s Abuja secretariat to return his nomination documents, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has completely blown up rumors suggesting he is positioning himself to be the running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for the 2027 transition cycle.

Speaking on the sidelines of his ongoing national consultations, the former Minister of Transportation didn’t hold back his frustration regarding claims that he was ready to surrender his top-tier ambitions. “Please stop that rumor,” an angry Amaechi told reporters, shutting down rumors of an internal consensus. “I did not buy a ₦90 million expression of interest and nomination form to become a Vice President. I am in this presidential race to win the ticket.”

The sudden friction comes as a three-way battle locks down the ADC presidential portal. Following the strategic withdrawal of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to the newly formed NDC, the fight for the ADC ticket has effectively narrowed down to Atiku, Amaechi, and corporate heavyweight Hayatudeen Muhammed. While political analysts speculated that veteran opposition heavyweights might form a “security shield” by combining forces, Amaechi insisted that no leadership meetings have been held to discuss stepping down, meaning a full-blown primary election is unavoidable.

Taking a direct shot at the older generation of politicians currently dominating the opposition trenches, the 60-year-old politician argued that Nigeria’s modern hurdles cannot be solved by archaic manuals. Amaechi stated that the country’s current structural and economic crises require a leader who possesses a balance of deep administrative experience and physical energy. He pushed forward his personal resume reminding critics of his years as a Speaker of the Rivers House of Assembly, Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, and a federal infrastructure driver as the exact technical rescue the nation needs.

With the primary timeline rapidly closing in on the late-May deadline, Amaechi’s aggressive “hands-off-my-ambition” warning has permanently closed the portal for an easy compromise. For Atiku’s camp, which has openly criticized presidential zoning as unnecessary, Amaechi’s resistance signals a massive internal battle ahead. One thing is now completely absolute in the race for the ADC ticket: the former Rivers governor has zero intentions of running a support manual for anyone else.
