Archbishop Akinola Calls for Fair Elections and Strong Leadership Ahead of 2027 Vote
As Nigeria gears up for the 2027 general elections, Archbishop Dr. Taiwo Akinola has urged for a trustworthy electoral process that focuses on capable leadership and fairness. He made these remarks while speaking to reporters ahead of the Rhema Christian Church’s 35th anniversary and World Convention, set to begin on November 1, 2026, in Sango, Ogun State.
Akinola expressed concerns about the current economic struggles, insecurity, and rising political tensions in the country. He highlighted that the upcoming anniversary is not just a celebration but a chance to reflect on the church’s journey and responsibilities.
On the topic of political competition, Akinola stated that it should not be viewed as persecution of opposition parties. He believes that political parties need to strengthen their structures and operate within the law to compete effectively. He also mentioned that allegations of misconduct should be addressed through proper legal channels.
Regarding the idea of state police, Akinola noted that while it could enhance security, its success would depend on well-crafted laws and oversight to prevent misuse. He warned that the real issue lies with the individuals in charge, not the institution itself.
Reflecting on his 35 years in ministry, Akinola shared that challenges should be seen as opportunities for growth. He emphasized the importance of training and developing future leaders, regardless of setbacks. He also mentioned that the church aims to expand both in Nigeria and internationally, despite financial constraints.
As the church celebrates its anniversary, Akinola’s vision is to ensure that it remains committed to the teachings of the Gospel and demonstrates love among its members. He believes that churches should stay neutral in politics while still addressing issues of justice and governance.
Finally, Akinola stressed the need for churches to respond to the immediate needs of their communities, especially during tough economic times. He called for practical assistance alongside spiritual support, highlighting that faith should be paired with wisdom and responsible action.
