Borno Police Explain Arrests of Men Wearing ‘Tinubu Must Go’ Shirts

The Borno State Police have clarified the circumstances surrounding the arrest of five men in Maiduguri who were wearing T-shirts that said “Tinubu Must Go.” The police stated that the men were not arrested for their political opinions, but for allegedly possessing illegal drugs and for actions that could disturb the public peace.

The arrests took place on September 25, 2026, during a routine patrol in the West End Roundabout area of Maiduguri. Police found the suspects with 15 wraps of dried leaves believed to be Indian hemp, 100 tablets thought to be a drug called D5, a shisha pot, scissors, and the T-shirts.

According to police spokesperson Nahum Daso, the suspects underwent preliminary investigations where their statements were recorded before the case was taken to court. The police emphasized that the decision to prosecute was made to allow a court to examine the evidence and make a ruling.

The police rejected claims that the arrests were politically motivated. They stated that the Nigeria Police Force operates as a professional and non-partisan organization, ensuring no discrimination based on political beliefs.

In their statement, the police urged the public to rely on verified information and allow the legal process to unfold. They reaffirmed their commitment to protecting human rights and maintaining public safety.
