Cardinal Onaiyekan Calls for Fair Elections in Nigeria Ahead of 2027 Vote

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and political leaders to allow Nigerians to freely choose their leaders. This appeal came during a meeting in Abuja on Monday, where he was joined by the Council of the Wise, led by former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola.

Onaiyekan emphasized the need for a free, fair, and credible electoral process. He urged all involved, including security agencies, to act professionally and avoid actions that could lead to unrest. He stated that everyone must follow the established rules for elections to ensure a smooth process.

The Cardinal expressed concern over the lack of significant improvement in Nigeria’s elections since 1999. He pointed out that voter turnout figures are discouraging and reminded INEC Chairman, Professor Amupitan, of his promise to deliver a credible election. He noted that the President has assured INEC of its independence, encouraging them to act without undue pressure.

Onaiyekan also praised the efforts of the National Peace Committee, which has worked to promote peaceful elections. However, he noted that some political actors have not adhered to commitments made to ensure responsible conduct. Despite this, he remains hopeful for a better election process in 2027.

Justice Ariwoola, speaking on behalf of the Council of the Wise, echoed Onaiyekan’s sentiments. He urged politicians to avoid hate speech and inflammatory remarks that could incite violence. He also called on political parties and candidates to follow their own rules and INEC guidelines to build trust with voters.

The Council of the Wise is composed of respected individuals from various regions of Nigeria, tasked with promoting national unity and strengthening democracy. They aim to encourage peaceful and transparent elections in 2027.
