Cristiano Ronaldo Explains Departure from Portugal National Team Camp
Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken out about his recent decision to leave the Portugal national team camp. He accused coach Jorge Jesus of not keeping his promises on two occasions.
In a personal statement shared on X, the 41-year-old captain detailed his experience during the team’s last training camp. He mentioned that he had planned to say goodbye to the Portuguese people after the 2026 World Cup, but was encouraged to continue playing by the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Pedro Proença.
Ronaldo expressed his support for Jesus as the new coach and was initially happy with the decision. He described a meeting with Jesus where the coach outlined a plan for Ronaldo’s participation in matches. Jesus assured him that he would play in both the first and last matches, with some substitutions in between.
However, things changed before the match against Norway. Ronaldo was surprised when Jesus asked if he could play for 30 minutes. He agreed, but was later left on the bench during the game. This led Ronaldo to feel that the coach had broken his promise.
Ronaldo apologized for not greeting fans after the match, calling it a personal failure. He later had a private meeting with Jesus, where they discussed a public clarification of the situation. However, the coach’s statements did not match what they had agreed upon, prompting Ronaldo to leave the camp.
He accepted that the football federation might impose a punishment for his departure but emphasized that he is always ready to compete for the national team if he is fit and performing well at his club.
