Ekiti State’s Digital Postcode Initiative Aims to Boost Economic Growth
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has reaffirmed his support for a new digital postcode project that aims to enhance innovation and establish the state as a digital economic center. He made these remarks during a workshop focused on the project in Ado Ekiti.
The workshop, organized by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) and the Ekiti State Geospatial Data Centre, brought together traditional leaders, local government officials, and community representatives. The initiative is part of a broader effort to improve Nigeria’s postcode system, which has been criticized for being ineffective.
Oyebanji explained that the current postcode system hinders businesses from reaching customers and makes it difficult for the government to plan infrastructure and deliver services. The new Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System is designed to create a unique code for every street and building, making it easier for residents to receive mail and access services.
The governor highlighted several benefits of the new system, including better emergency response, improved tax collection, and enhanced urban planning. He also noted that accurate addresses could lead to better voter registration and electoral processes.
Tola Odeyemi, the Postmaster-General of NIPOST, called the initiative a major step in Nigeria’s digital transformation. She praised Ekiti for its commitment to education and governance, which helped it become a pilot state for the project.
The two-day workshop also aimed to outline the project’s timeline, methodology, and expected outcomes, while ensuring that all stakeholders understand their roles in the implementation process.
