Ikorodu Residents Demand Action on Year-Long Power Outages and Billing Issues

Residents in Ikorodu, Lagos State, are voicing their frustrations over long power outages and disputed electricity bills. These issues were highlighted during a town hall meeting organized by the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC).

Many residents reported that they have been without electricity for about 13 months after their transformer was removed in late 2025. Sowemo Adekunle Wemo, a community leader, stated that this blackout has severely affected local businesses and raised security concerns.

Another community representative, Prince Jimoh Ismail Kayode, mentioned that some residents are being asked to pay for electricity infrastructure, such as poles and wires. He also raised concerns about high electricity bills, claiming that some customers are charged around ₦35,000 monthly despite experiencing power cuts.

Omagu Nwachukwu, a deputy director at the FCCPC, warned electricity companies against unfair billing practices and delays in providing meters. He emphasized that estimated billing should be replaced with accurate metering.

Ikeja Electric’s Chief Commercial Officer, Ayodele Dosunmu, acknowledged the complaints and mentioned plans to replace 21 faulty transformers in the area. He also noted that vandalism of electricity infrastructure is a significant issue.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) reported securing over ₦186 million in bill adjustments for consumers facing billing disputes. The FCCPC aims to continue working directly with residents to address their concerns.
