Kaduna-Kano Railway Project Nears Completion at 90 Percent

The Federal Government has announced that the Kaduna-Kano section of the railway project is now 90 percent complete. During an inspection in Zaria, Engr. Funso Adebiyi, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, expressed confidence that the remaining work would be finished soon, allowing for smooth train services along the route.

Adebiyi praised the quality of the construction, highlighting the excellent rail alignment, embankment protection, drainage, and soil stabilization efforts. He noted significant earthwork, with some areas elevated by as much as six meters.

Despite the progress, Adebiyi pointed out that issues with land acquisition and compensation claims in Kaduna city are holding up the final link between Jaji and the Abuja-Kaduna rail corridor. He assured stakeholders that the government is addressing these problems and will prioritize them after the inspection team returns to Abuja.

The inspected section is about 145 kilometers long, part of the total 200-kilometer Kaduna-Kano route, with only about 10 kilometers of work left. Adebiyi also mentioned that railway sections from Kano to Katsina are expected to be completed by December, with construction ongoing around the clock.

Engr. Habiba Buhari, the Director of Rail Transport Services, added that the inspection aimed to evaluate the technical quality of the infrastructure before final tests and operations begin. The Kaduna-Kano railway is a key part of the government’s plan to enhance Nigeria’s rail network, improve travel between major cities, and support economic growth along the route.
