Transforming Orange Peels into Useful Products: Oil, Soap, and Candles

Many people throw away orange peels without realizing they can be turned into useful products. With some simple techniques, you can extract essential oil from these peels and create items like soap and candles.

The oil found in orange peels is mainly made up of a substance called D-limonene. This is what gives oranges their distinct smell and is also used in many cleaning products and air fresheners.

To extract the oil, you can use a method called steam distillation. This involves boiling orange peels in water. The steam carries the oil with it, and when it cools down, the oil separates from the water. You don’t need fancy equipment; a pot, a lid, and a cooling tube will do.

However, the amount of oil you can get from orange peels is relatively small, usually between 1% and 4% of the peel’s weight. This means you need a good number of peels to produce a useful amount of oil. Collecting peels over time from juice stands or food vendors can be a practical approach.

Once you have the oil, you can use it in various ways. Adding it to soap not only gives a pleasant scent but also provides antimicrobial benefits. Similarly, mixing the oil with wax before it hardens creates scented candles. Some people even use it in natural bug repellents since limonene can deter certain insects.

It’s important to remember that undiluted orange oil can irritate the skin, so it should always be mixed with a carrier substance before use.

In Nigeria, a small bottle of sweet orange essential oil can sell for about 5,500 to 6,400 naira. This shows that turning waste into valuable products can be both environmentally friendly and profitable.

With orange peels being discarded daily, this process offers an easy way to recycle waste into something beneficial.
