Harry Kane Wins 2026 Ballon d’Or Over Kylian Mbappé by Narrow Margin

Harry Kane, the England captain, has won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, edging out French forward Kylian Mbappé by a very small margin. The exact difference in points has not been revealed, but it is reportedly less than the 41 points that separated Rodri and Vinicius Junior in the 2024 awards.

This announcement came after the awards ceremony held in London, where Kane was recognized as the top men’s player, surpassing Mbappé and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal. Vincent Garcia, the editor-in-chief of France Football, confirmed that Kane’s victory was extremely close, stating it was decided by a hair’s breadth.

Kane’s win marks a significant achievement, as he is the first English player to win the men’s Ballon d’Or in 25 years, following Michael Owen’s victory in 2001. During the 2025/26 season, Kane scored 73 goals for his club and country, according to UEFA.

The Ballon d’Or is awarded based on votes from an international panel of journalists. Each voter ranks ten players, giving points from 15 down to one. Voters consider individual performances, team successes, and overall sportsmanship.

This year’s result adds to a history of closely contested Ballon d’Or finishes. For instance, in 2019, Lionel Messi won by just seven points over Virgil van Dijk, and in 2024, Rodri won by 41 points against Vinicius Junior. Historically, some of the closest finishes include Bobby Charlton’s one-point win over Eusébio in 1966 and Matthias Sammer’s narrow victory against Ronaldo in 1996.

In contrast, Ousmane Dembélé won the 2025 Ballon d’Or by a much larger margin, finishing 321 points ahead of Lamine Yamal.
