Key Races to Watch in the Upcoming US Midterm Elections

On November 3, Americans will head to the polls for midterm elections that will determine if President Donald Trump’s Republican Party keeps control of Congress. High living costs, the ongoing conflict with Iran, and Trump’s low approval ratings have given Democrats a chance to compete in traditionally Republican areas.

Currently, Republicans hold a 53-47 majority in the Senate. Democrats need to gain four seats to take control. If there is a tie, the Vice President can cast the deciding vote. All 435 House seats are up for grabs, and Democrats need at least 218 seats to secure a majority.

Several Senate races are particularly competitive. In North Carolina, former Democratic governor Roy Cooper is running against Republican Michael Whatley for a seat left open by Thom Tillis. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico faces Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has a strong conservative base. Ohio sees former Democratic senator Sherrod Brown trying to reclaim his seat from Republican Jon Husted.

Other notable races include Republican Susan Collins in Maine facing Troy Jackson, and in Alaska, former Democratic congresswoman Mary Peltola is challenging Republican Daniel Sullivan. Iowa’s race for Joni Ernst’s seat features Republican Ashley Hinson against Democrat Josh Turek.

In the House, several suburban districts are in play. In New York’s 17th district, Republican Mike Lawler is up against Democrat Cait Conley. Nebraska’s 2nd district will see a competitive race between Republican Brinker Harding and Democrat Denise Powell.

Governors are also being elected in 36 states, with several races expected to be close. In Texas, Democrat Gina Hinojosa challenges Republican Greg Abbott, while in Ohio, Democrat Amy Acton faces Republican Vivek Ramaswamy.
