Lagos Brings Back Historic Horse Racing Carnival with 100 Stallions, Live Music, and Food to Boost Tourism
Lagos State is gearing up to host its first-ever Lagos Grand Horse Race, a massive three-day festival designed to mix high-speed equestrian sports with live music, fashion, and food. The mega-event, themed “Race Into the Future,” is scheduled to take over the iconic National Stadium in Surulere from September 11 to 13, 2026.
Organizers are pulling out all the stops for the festival, predicting that more than 30,000 local and international spectators will flood the stadium grounds over the weekend. According to the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, this initiative is a strategic move to position the state as Africa’s top hub for sports tourism while creating immediate business opportunities for local residents and investors.
The festival is expected to trigger a massive wave of economic activity across the city’s hospitality sector. With thousands of visitors traveling into the area, local hotels, restaurants, transport operators, and artisans are expected to see a substantial rise in patronage and spending throughout the three-day run.
To bring the competition to life, the event will feature roughly 100 competitive horses alongside skilled traditional horsemen traveling down from different regions of Nigeria. The organizers have also partnered with local polo clubs to ensure top-tier athletic displays, while offering affordable horse rentals on-site so curious attendees can experience riding firsthand.
Femi Fasoro, the founder and convener of the Lagos Grand Horse Race, highlighted that horse racing has a deep, proud lineage in Lagos, tracing all the way back to 1904 when it was first introduced to the city. While the sport has historically been seen as an exclusive past-time for the elite, this new carnival is deliberately designed to be accessible to everyone.
By merging the thundering excitement of the race track with music concerts, fashion runways, and local food exhibitions, the state government is aiming to build a lasting annual flagship event that preserves Nigeria’s rich equestrian heritage, engages the youth, and showcases the vibrant, innovative spirit of Lagos to a global audience.
