Legal Heavyweight Akangbe Demands Suspension of NBA Election After Massive Portal Crash Spares Nobody

The flagship national election of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has run into a massive structural storm after a series of devastating technical glitches effectively locked thousands of lawyers out of the electronic voting platform, prompting an urgent demand to call off the entire exercise.

The high-stakes election, organized to choose the new executive leadership for Africa’s largest professional body of lawyers, was supposed to showcase a seamless digital voting experience. Instead, the system suffered an embarrassing breakdown almost immediately after the virtual gates opened. The official portal repeatedly timed out, crashed under user traffic, and routinely rejected the accreditation details of eligible voters nationwide.

The technological breakdown reached a bizarre peak when one of the frontline presidential contenders, Lateef Omoyemi Akangbe, SAN, publicly announced that he had been completely stripped of his ability to vote in his own election. Despite spending nearly 12 hours trying to log in and contacting the uppermost echelons of the bar’s leadership for assistance, Akangbe’s attempts were repeatedly bounced back by the system.

“Even I, as a candidate running for the highest office in the Bar, have been completely unable to cast my vote,” a visibly frustrated Lateef Akangbe shared. “I made a direct note to the NBA President and the head of the Association of Criminal Bar Advocates of Nigeria. Between the two of them, they generated and sent me about three or four separate bypass links to help me vote. Not a single one worked. The platform keeps flashing an error screen telling me that my credentials are completely invalid. If a presidential candidate is facing this level of digital exclusion, you can only imagine what regular members are going through.”

The candidate revealed that his campaign lines have been flooded with desperate complaints from furious supporters across multiple regional branches, including Jos, Owerri, Kogi, and Benue, all describing a total inability to receive One-Time Passwords (OTPs) or access the voting interface. Newly graduated lawyers from the 2025 set were also disproportionately affected by the data synchronization errors.

Reacting to the opacity of the process, Akangbe fired a strongly worded emergency protest letter to the Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA). The Senior Advocate argued that continuing the ballot under conditions of a total portal collapse is completely indefensible and would leave any declared winner with a heavily compromised mandate. He demanded an immediate suspension of the exercise until an independent forensic audit can be conducted on the service provider’s infrastructure.

The technological failure hits at a particularly sensitive time, with early, scattered results showing fellow Senior Advocate Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya holding a temporary lead over Akangbe and Olumuyiwa Akinboro. While some veteran bar elders are urging calm and insisting the long-term integrity of the institution’s voting legacy remains intact, the widespread anger from disenfranchised lawyers online indicates that the electoral committee faces an uphill task to salvage the credibility of the ballot.
