Minister Defends Change in Ondo Coastal Highway Route Due to Engineering Challenges
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has defended the decision to change the route of the Ondo section of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. He stated that the original path included deep pits over 100 metres, which would have made construction much more expensive.
Umahi spoke in Abuja while updating the public on major road projects led by President Bola Tinubu. He acknowledged that there have been complaints about the route change but insisted that the decision was necessary for effective use of public funds.
He explained that the original route was not suitable due to the challenging terrain and lack of appropriate materials for construction. To avoid these issues, the ministry redesigned the route to ensure better construction conditions.
The diversion affects about 67 kilometres of the highway, with sections in both Ogun and Ondo states. Umahi noted that work is progressing on other sections of the coastal highway, with some already completed and ready for use.
In addition to the route changes, he mentioned that the continuation of the highway into Edo State will follow the existing East-West Road. This adjustment aims to address flooding risks and improve traffic flow, particularly by avoiding congestion in Benin City.
Umahi also highlighted ongoing road projects in the Niger Delta region, urging residents to recognize the government’s efforts to improve infrastructure.
