NDC Candidates in Kano Accuse Kwankwasiyya Movement of Intimidation Ahead of 2027 Elections

Five candidates from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State have accused the Kwankwasiyya Movement of intimidation as they prepare for the 2027 elections. The candidates allege they are being harassed and that there are attempts to manipulate the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) regarding the party’s official candidate list.

The candidates are Abdulmajid Umar, Shaaban Sharada, Ishmael Sani, Ibrahim Bango, and Nasir Ahmed. They made their claims in a complaint dated October 17, 2026, which was shared with the media in Kano.

In their complaint, the candidates challenged a recent petition filed by the Kwankwasiyya Movement with INEC. They pointed out that a Federal High Court ruling on October 14, 2026, confirmed two of them as the legitimate NDC candidates and left the decision on three others pending.

The candidates expressed disappointment that despite meeting all legal requirements, a powerful figure within the NDC in Kano is allegedly trying to undermine their candidacy. They stressed that no local political leader should be allowed to override the decisions made by the national headquarters of the party.

The candidates also criticized a protest organized by Kwankwasiyya supporters against them, claiming it does not represent the views of the NDC leadership. They believe this protest was orchestrated by an influential individual who does not respect the law or the party’s constitution.

As the election approaches, tensions within the NDC in Kano continue to rise, with these candidates determined to uphold their rights to run for office.
