Newly Elected NBA President Badejo-Okusanya Vows to Resign Immediately If Audit Finds She Was Rigged Into Power

The aftermath of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) national elections has taken a high-stakes turn after newly elected president, Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya (SAN), issued a daring pledge to walk away from office if an independent investigation proves her victory was fraudulently manufactured.

Badejo-Okusanya made history after securing over 12,000 votes in a nationwide electronic ballot, defeating fellow Senior Advocates of Nigeria Lateef Akangbe and Olumuyiwa Akinboro to become the 33rd NBA President and only the second woman to head the association.

However, her victory was immediately shadowed by severe pushback from rival camps and legal stakeholders following widespread technical glitches. The election suffered from severe server lag, e-voting portal downtime, and delayed One-Time Passwords (OTPs), which left thousands of registered lawyers unable to cast their votes. Out of more than 82,000 eligible lawyers, only around 26,000 votes were recorded, prompting claims of systemic disenfranchisement from opposing candidates.

Addressing the fierce post-election controversy during a national broadcast, the new bar leader confronted the rigging allegations head-on, emphasizing that her professional standing is worth far more than any administrative title.

“I ran a clean, exhausting, and transparent campaign across legal branches across the country,” Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya stated firmly. “I did not manipulate any system, nor did I seek any illegal advantage. If an independent technical audit or credible investigation shows today that this election was rigged in my favor or that I benefited from portal manipulation, I will not spend another minute in office—I will resign immediately. My integrity and my reputation as a lawyer mean everything to me.”

The election controversy has sparked deep debate among senior members of the legal profession, with analysts highlighting that low voter turnout and digital friction risk undermining public confidence in the legal association’s democratic leadership.

Reaching out to her opponents, Badejo-Okusanya appealed for unity across the legal fraternity. She promised that her administration’s immediate priority will be overhauling the NBA’s digital voting infrastructure, protecting the welfare of young lawyers, and ensuring that the association speaks with a strong, unbroken voice on the rule of law.
