Nigeria in Darkness as Gas Companies Stop Supply Over ₦3.3 Trillion Debt; Businesses Cry Out Over Heavy Losses
Nigeria is facing a very serious power problem right now. From Lagos to Kano, many families are living in total darkness. On Saturday, March 14, 2026, it was revealed that the main reason for the blackout is a huge debt of ₦3.3 trillion owed to the companies that supply gas to our power plants.
Because these gas companies have not received their money, they have stopped sending gas to the stations that make electricity. This has made the amount of power in the country drop very low. Instead of the 14,000 megawatts we should have, we are struggling to get even 3,000 megawatts.
This “Great Darkness” is hurting everyone. People who sell frozen foods are seeing their fish and meat spoil. Artisans like welders cannot work, and many shops are forced to stay closed. Even those who pay the most for electricity (Band A) are complaining that they have no light to run their homes.
The government says they are working with the Ministry of Petroleum to solve the gas problem, but for now, the debt keeps growing by ₦200 billion every month. Nigerians are waiting and hoping that the light will come back soon so that businesses can start working again.
