Nigerian Communication Scholar Professor Sobowale Passes Away at 85
The Nigerian media and academic communities are in mourning following the death of Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, a respected communication scholar and educator. He passed away yesterday morning after an illness at the age of 85, according to a family statement.
Known affectionately as Pa Deacon Prof. Sobowale, he made significant contributions to journalism and communication in Nigeria. His passing is seen as a major loss, especially for the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals in Nigeria (ACSPN), where he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid tribute to Sobowale, recalling his role in leading Nigeria’s first nationwide opinion poll in 1979. Tinubu described Sobowale as a pioneer of evidence-based journalism and acknowledged his influence on generations of journalists and communication professionals.
Former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, also expressed his sadness, calling Sobowale an accomplished professional and wise counselor. He highlighted their close relationship during their time in government and noted Sobowale’s impact on education in Lagos State.
Chief Gboyega Okegbenro, a former editor and public relations expert, described Sobowale’s death as a significant blow to the media and education sectors. He praised Sobowale’s dedication to teaching and his contributions to the establishment of various communication departments in Nigerian universities.
Sobowale’s legacy includes numerous accolades, such as the national honor of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Diamond Awards for Media Excellence. His work has left a lasting mark on journalism and education in Nigeria.
