Woman Faces Charges for Alleged Cyberstalking of Business Executive
The police have charged Ifeoma Vivian Nwafor, a 35-year-old woman, in the Federal High Court in Lagos. She faces three counts related to conspiracy and cyberstalking Dr. Folashade Okoya, the Managing Director of Eleganza Industries Limited.
Nwafor, who is from Anambra State, allegedly used her Instagram accounts to share harmful and false content about Mrs. Okoya. She pleaded not guilty to the charges. The court granted her bail of 3 million Naira, but she must remain in custody until her bail conditions are met.
The charges stem from a social media incident in June, shortly after Mrs. Okoya’s daughter’s traditional wedding. Reports surfaced claiming an inappropriate relationship between Mrs. Okoya and a well-known figure in the Nigerian entertainment industry. This content gained significant attention online.
The prosecution claims that Nwafor and others conspired to create and share this damaging material, which included derogatory statements and images of Mrs. Okoya. They argue that these actions were intended to cause distress and harm to her reputation.
The court has scheduled the next hearing for November 8, where the case will continue to be examined. Legal experts warn that sharing defamatory content can lead to legal consequences, even if the person merely forwards the information.
