Nigerian Education Minister Says AI Cannot Replace Teachers

The Federal Government of Nigeria has affirmed that artificial intelligence (AI) and technology will not replace teachers. Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, made this statement during the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebrations in Abuja.

Speaking on the theme “Protecting and Advancing the Status of the Teaching Profession in a Rapidly Changing World,” Alausa highlighted that while technology can enhance learning, the personal touch and judgement of teachers are irreplaceable. He noted that machines cannot replicate the encouragement and connection that skilled educators provide.

Alausa stressed the importance of preparing teachers to effectively use new technologies while maintaining high professional standards. He described teachers as the foundation of all professions, stating that no doctor, engineer, or public servant could succeed without the influence of a teacher.

The minister called for continuous investment in teachers, emphasizing their need for respect, career development, and adequate resources. He assured that the government, under President Bola Tinubu, is focused on improving the conditions for teachers and learners alike.

Alausa also urged a collective effort from state governments, schools, and communities to support teachers. He highlighted that every child, regardless of their background, should have access to quality education and the necessary support from their teachers.

During the event, Alausa congratulated the winners of the President’s Teachers’ and Schools’ Excellence Awards, recognizing their contributions to education. He encouraged all teachers to view their work as crucial to shaping the future of Nigeria.

As Nigeria celebrated World Teachers’ Day, the minister’s message was clear: the future of millions of children is closely linked to the quality and dedication of their teachers.
