Nigerian Military Confirms Ongoing Operations Against Boko Haram and Other Criminal Groups

The Defence Headquarters in Nigeria has stated that there is no ceasefire agreement with Boko Haram or other criminal groups. The military plans to keep its operations against terrorists and kidnappers active across the country.

This announcement comes after reports suggested that the Federal Government had secretly agreed to a ceasefire with a faction of Boko Haram, which reportedly led to a period of calm in the North-East region for about three months. These claims were based on information from sources close to senior Boko Haram members.

During a security briefing in Abuja, Major General Samaila Uba, the Director of Defence Information, emphasized that the military is maintaining pressure on armed groups. He highlighted recent successes, including the neutralization of terrorists, the arrest of suspects, and the rescue of kidnapped victims.

Uba clearly stated, “On the issue of whether there is a ceasefire with Boko Haram, I want to make it clear that there is nothing like a ceasefire.” He added that the military’s efforts also target kidnappers and other criminal elements threatening the safety of Nigerians.

The military has been proactive in identifying areas where insurgents may have relocated, indicating that the movement of these groups is a sign of the effectiveness of ongoing operations. Uba assured that the Armed Forces are taking measures to prevent insurgents from establishing new bases.

In September and October, troops conducted 588 security operations, resulting in the neutralization of 435 terrorists and bandits, including several high-profile commanders. They also arrested over 800 suspects and rescued more than 700 victims, including students and other civilians.

Uba noted that these efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance military presence in vulnerable areas and dismantle the capabilities of armed groups.
