NIPOST Introduces Digital Postcode System to Enhance Service Access Across Nigeria
The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has launched a new digital postcode system aimed at improving access to services across the country. The announcement was made by Mrs. Tola Odeyemi, the Postmaster-General, on Friday.
This National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System will assign unique identities to buildings, making it easier to find homes, businesses, and public institutions. Odeyemi highlighted that this change is a significant step towards modernizing NIPOST’s operations to focus more on digital services.
According to Odeyemi, many Nigerians have struggled with unreliable location information, which has made it difficult for courier services, emergency responders, and banks to locate addresses. She emphasized that the new system aims to solve these issues by giving every addressable building a specific geospatial identity.
The postcode system will cover various types of buildings, including homes, shops, farms, schools, and offices. Each postcode will provide details about the state, local government area, and district of the property.
Odeyemi spoke during the celebration of World Post Day, noting that the new system will enhance digital services, especially in areas like logistics, e-commerce, and financial inclusion. She mentioned that NIPOST is transitioning from traditional mail services to a more comprehensive digital service model.
In addition to launching the postcode system, NIPOST also announced the winners of its 2026 Essay Writing competition for secondary schools, with over 3000 students participating. The overall winner was Olusanwo Precious Oluwasemilore from Ogun State.
