More than 1,000 Islamic clerics from northern Nigeria have urged President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his plans to run for re-election in 2027. They made this call during a national conference held in Kano State, highlighting serious issues such as killings, kidnappings, and terrorism, especially in the North-West region.
The conference, organized by the clerics’ group known as “Ko Da Naka,” focused on assessing the current state of the nation under Tinubu’s leadership. The clerics stated that if the President does not withdraw from the race, citizens should reject his candidacy in favor of leaders who can provide better governance.
In their statement, the clerics expressed deep concerns about the government’s handling of security and economic policies, which they believe have worsened the lives of ordinary Nigerians. They criticized the removal of the fuel subsidy, changes to the currency exchange system, and increases in electricity rates and taxes, saying these actions have led to greater hardship.
The clerics emphasized that the government must take urgent steps to improve security in the Northwest and other affected areas. They also pointed out the alarming trend of skilled professionals, including doctors and teachers, leaving Nigeria due to unemployment and poor working conditions.
They called for better salaries and working conditions for these professionals to encourage them to stay or return to Nigeria. The clerics urged religious leaders to speak out against injustice and to hold political leaders accountable, regardless of their background.
In conclusion, the clerics warned that if the government does not change its harmful economic policies, it would be inappropriate to re-elect it in the upcoming elections. They urged Nigerians to prioritize the country’s future over political affiliations and to evaluate candidates based on their qualifications and policies.
