Ogun State to Launch Bulk Food Sales and Expand Bus Services to Cut Living Costs
The Ogun State Government is planning to start a bulk food purchase scheme to help lower the cost of essential goods. This initiative aims to make food and household items more affordable for residents. Governor Dapo Abiodun shared these plans during a meeting with labor representatives in Ijebu-Ode.
Abiodun explained that the program will be run through the Gateway Trading Corporation. This will allow the government to buy food in large quantities, which can lead to better prices for consumers. The governor believes this will help families who are struggling with rising food prices.
He also mentioned that having cheaper food options might encourage local traders to lower their prices, creating more competition in the market. Abiodun assured labor leaders that his administration is committed to making the bulk food scheme a reality.
In addition to the food initiative, the governor announced plans to increase the number of mass transit buses available for government workers and the public. This decision comes after labor groups expressed the need for more buses to ease daily commuting and reduce transportation costs.
Abiodun addressed other concerns during the meeting, including leave allowances and the Contributory Pension Scheme. He emphasized the importance of teachers in the state’s development and highlighted the government’s efforts in improving education, including building and renovating classrooms and hiring new teachers.
Labor leaders praised the governor for his administration’s achievements, including timely salary payments and addressing outstanding pensions. However, they also called for a review of the pension scheme and the establishment of a Ministry of Labour Affairs.
